BARITA, TUI ACHISH KEMON?
বাড়িটা তুই আছিস কেমন? – Director’s Note
This play is an outreach for Bengali theatre lovers who have faith in theatre; who believe theatre is an integral part of our community and it fits our lifestyle and our culture; that theater serves an analogous function in our lives – for group reflection, confession, expiation and celebration; and that it is meant to hold the psychic well-being and the sanity of a society.
In “Barita, Tui Achis Kemon”, I have blended the Bengali diaspora with Kolkata theatre by merging my sentiments of home-away-from-home with my visceral connection with the city I left behind. In a global economy, we live in many cities. But there’s only one city that lives in us. In my case, it’s Kolkata. My inspiration to write this play came from all the parents from Kolkata who visit us in the US, and who try and balance their inner angst, loneliness and yearning for Kolkata with their children’s desire to spend time with them. Both the parents and the children go through the journey I expressed in this play. A journey that is sometimes, funny, sometimes gut wrenching, sometimes angry, and sometimes sweet and full of love – like life itself. In particular, I’ve drawn many situations and dialogs in this play from my father-in-law’s visit to my place, and I’m dedicating this play to him. I sincerely hope you enjoy this poignantly funny play.
